Planning for Sustainable Land Use and Transport

The committee encourages debate on the integration of transport and land-use planning through interesting research results and examples of good practice. Papers should show a direct link to policy, such as research for policy development and/or to assess the effectiveness of policy initiatives and monitoring procedures. The committee is particularly looking for contributions which address emerging challenges such as: e-commerce, changing operating hours, demographic change, new economic geography, climate change and air pollution (e.g. PM)

Planning for more sustainable patterns of development

  • developing/implementing integrated land-use and transport strategies to create more sustainable communities (e.g. rail-oriented development, compact city and walkable neighbourhoods)
  • regional versus local accessibility/patterns - how far is too far?
  • estimating the impacts of land-use change on transport
  • implementing policy/methodology (e.g. framework, communication strategy)

Accessibility for all: social inclusion, demand management, reducing car use

  • interactions between transport and the consumer economy, social networking, communication means, and marketing
  • managing mobility in city centres, for companies and target groups etc.
  • awareness campaigns - how to overcome barriers and obtain acceptability
  • promoting walking and cycling
  • creating places for people - redesigning public space, providing shared spaces
  • * creating dedicated facilities (e.g. bus lanes)

Assessing/Monitoring the sustainability of integrated strategies

  • strategic appraisal of the sustainability/effectiveness of planning policies and mobility plans
  • indicators for monitoring in the short/long run
  • appropriate monitoring tools and techniques (GIS applications etc.)
